Sarah’s Report – Last week my family and I attended the ITCA Topper World Championships in Loctudy, France. I participated in the event representing the club and Ireland with over 220 sailors from various countries such as China, South Africa, Macaow, Great Britain and Ireland.
The first three days of the competition were qualification series, and each morning I was assigned into one of three fleets, each with 60 competitors ; Red, Blue or Yellow and we had 3 races each day. The first three days were medium wind conditions of about 12 knots each day but a tide which ripped through the course at particular times. After the qualification series I was in 39th place securing me Gold fleet for the final series which would be for the last two days. I went into the final series carrying a range of results and was excited to see how my results would change when racing in the final series. I went into racing on the fourth day carrying a discard of 29th and knew what had to perform well in order to gain places. After the second race my tiller snapped making a very stressful 15 minutes between races while Dad rushed over on a support rib bringing a replacement rudder and quickly returning to the start line just in time to start the third race. I had a reasonable day with results all in the top 20 bringing me up to 28th place overall. The last day of the competition was forecast-ed to be winds of 20+ knots and a large swell but once we reached the race course we realized that the winds were pushing 10 knots with large waves, making it difficult to gain speed over the waves. After a rocky last day I gained one place and ended up in 27th overall. I loved every minute of my experience and I am excited to move onto my new class of boat next year and continue competing all over the world! 🙂
