The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is designed to teach boat handling and seamanship in either planing or displacement boats. The course may be taken by novices new to boating, as no previous knowledge is required.
RYA Power Schemes Instructor Handbook
This course is seen as the driving licence for powerboats. East Down Yacht Club (EDYC) prefers members achieve this qualification before driving club boats. The next course will run at EDYC over the two Sundays of 24 Sept and 1 Oct 2023. The course will run in EDYC’s three planing Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs).

We will notify everyone who expresses an interest in advance of registration opening. Registration will be via the EDYC website “Online Entries” link on the home page. Places on the course are limited.
The sailing committee may reserve spaces, for example so that volunteers can obtain pre-requisites to qualifications that support club activities.

At lease six candidates must sign up for the course to run; the maximum number of candidates for this course is nine. The ratio of candidates to instructors will be maximum 3:1.

EDYC’s online entries platform applies a small handling charge of between £2 and £4 per registration. Within the fee above is the amount of approximately £10 to cover certificates.
The discounted rate for volunteer instructors holding qualifications – is available at the discretion of the sailing committee.

Why attend?
To be more confident operating the club RIBs, work boat or personal tenders in support of sailing activity.
To learn new skills and spend an enjoyable two days on the water.
As a pre-requisite for RYA instructor and race management qualifications.
As a pre-requisite to the RYA Safety Boat Course which provides the skills to act as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, or canoes, or for racing or training activities.
What experience is required to attend this course?
None.
Do I need a RYA Powerboat Level 1 certificate?
No. Candidates for this course do not need to hold the Level 1 Start Powerboating qualification to attend this course.
What other powerboat courses are available at EDYC in 2023?
Later in 2023/early 2024 EDYC plans to run an RYA Safety Boat Course. Depending on demand EDYC may run other Powerboat Level 2 courses. A course needs a minimum of three candidates and one of the club’s RIBs to be available. Please talk to us if you have three candidates and two days in mind.
What other qualifications are relevant?
A knowledge of the theory from the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course will help with aspects of this Powerboat Level 2. This course ran in December 2022 at EDYC.
Practically, holding an RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate may assist candidates as marine VHF radios will be used on the Powerboat Level 2. This course ran at EDYC in February 2023.
The RYA First Aid Course could come in useful in case of an emergency afloat. This course ran at EDYC in January 2023.
